A Safer Future for Samrat Gaj

Born at Sapana Village Lodge on 9 January 2013, Samrat Gaj is the son of Srijana Kali and a wild male elephant named Ronaldo. His name means "king" in Nepali.

At just nine months old, Samrat became critically ill with elephant herpesvirus. Thanks to urgent efforts by Mr. Dhruba Giri to obtain lifesaving medicine, he survived. His story remains a powerful reminder of the importance of dedicated elephant care.

Now in his teenage years, Samrat is growing stronger and more independent. As a young male elephant, he can sometimes display challenging or aggressive behaviour. He needs careful management, experienced caretakers and an environment suited to his changing needs.

We are planning a dedicated, chain-free sanctuary space where Samrat can live with greater security, suitable space and dignity. Creating this environment is an important step towards meeting his long-term welfare needs.
