Sapana Elephant Care began with a single belief — that elephants deserve to live free from pain, exploitation, and fear. Nestled beside the ancient forests of Chitwan, we have built a refuge rooted in compassion, community, and the enduring bond between humans and elephants.
The seeds of Sapana Elephant Care were planted when the founders of Sapana Village Lodge witnessed the hardships faced by working elephants in Chitwan — animals used in tourism without proper nutrition, veterinary care, or rest. Moved by what they saw, they resolved to do things differently.
Over the years the vision grew from simple welfare improvements into a full sanctuary model: one where rescued and semi-retired elephants could roam more freely, receive expert mahout care, and connect meaningfully with visitors who genuinely cared about their wellbeing.
Today, Sapana Elephant Care stands as one of Nepal's leading ethical elephant sanctuaries — a place where history, culture, and conservation meet on the banks of the Rapti River.
Welfare protocols introduced — proper diet, reduced working hours, veterinary care.
Formal shift away from elephant rides toward ethical observation and enrichment programmes.
Independent sanctuary launched with a dedicated mahout team and international volunteer programme.
Several rescued elephants in our care, welcomed by thousands of compassionate visitors each year.
We are not a zoo, a circus, or a riding camp. Sapana Elephant Care is a genuine sanctuary where elephant welfare — physical, emotional, and social — always comes before any commercial interest.
Our team is made up of experienced local mahouts, wildlife experts, and dedicated community members from Sauraha and Chitwan who have grown up alongside these magnificent animals.
We work with international volunteers, conservation organisations, and ethical tourism networks to ensure our practices align with the highest global standards of elephant care.
From dawn bathing rituals to foraging walks through the buffer zone, our entire day revolves around the wellbeing of our elephants. Every activity is designed with their comfort and natural behaviour in mind.
Elephants bathe in the Rapti River each morning — a therapeutic ritual caring for their skin and joints.
Custom diet plans — seasonal fruits, sugarcane, and forest browse tailored to each elephant's individual needs.
Regular health checks, foot inspections, and specialist veterinary support ensure every elephant thrives.
We work with authorities to rescue exploited elephants and provide the patience and care needed for full recovery.
Our mission is to provide rescued and semi-retired elephants with lifelong sanctuary care — combining traditional mahout knowledge with modern welfare science. We are committed to education, ethical tourism, and community empowerment so that both elephants and the people who share their landscape can flourish together.
We envision a future where elephants in Nepal are no longer exploited, but revered — where communities prosper through compassionate stewardship, where travellers choose ethical encounters over entertainment, and where the forests of Chitwan echo with the sound of free, healthy herds.
Our mahouts, caretakers, and volunteers have devoted their lives to these elephants. They wake before sunrise, stay until dusk, and treat every elephant not as an animal in their charge — but as a member of their own family.
Real moments, real care, real elephants.
