A Safe Haven for Rescued Elephants
No Chain • No Pain • No Ride
Discover Our MissionThe Elephant Sanctuary at Sapana Village Lodge offers a humane and ethical haven for rescued elephants who were previously subjected to tourist rides and poor treatment. We are proud to provide a safe, peaceful home for five magnificent elephants who now live with dignity, freedom, and respect.
Through the vision and commitment of Sapana Village Lodge, we have established a chain-free sanctuary dedicated to ethical elephant care. Our guiding principle is simple yet powerful: “No Chain, No Pain, and No Ride.”
Our sanctuary spans open grasslands with flowing rivers, creating a natural environment where elephants can bathe, graze freely, play in the mud, and simply be elephants. At night, they sleep chain-free under the stars in spacious corrals, allowing them to roam, socialize, and rest comfortably.

Our five elephants were once forced to carry tourists on their backs, day after day, at another lodge where they were treated poorly. Their bodies bore the weight of endless rides, their spirits dimmed by chains and harsh commands.
When Dhruba Giri discovered their plight, he knew something had to change. Through careful negotiation and unwavering commitment, he made a deal with the previous owners to move these gentle giants to Sapana Village Lodge – a place where they could finally know peace and dignity.
Today, they roam vast grasslands, bathe in flowing rivers, graze on fresh vegetation, and sleep chain-free under the stars. They've rediscovered joy in simple pleasures: mud baths, playful splashing, and the companionship of their herd. This is their forever home.
Our elephants explore acres of grassland and dense forest, foraging naturally without restrictions.
They enjoy splashing and playing in the Rapti River, keeping their sensitive skin healthy and clean.
No chains, no stress – just the comfort of spacious shelters and the company of their family.
Many people ask why we don't simply release rescued elephants back into the wild. The answer is complex and rooted in their welfare and survival.
These elephants have been trained and cared for by humans their entire lives. They lack the survival skills needed to find food, water, and shelter independently in the wild.
Domesticated elephants may face rejection or aggression from wild elephant herds. Wild elephants operate in complex social structures, and introducing outsiders can lead to violence and stress.
Released elephants often wander into human settlements searching for food, causing crop damage and potential danger. This creates conflicts that endanger both elephants and local communities.
Nepal's forest habitat is already limited and under ecological pressure. There simply isn't enough protected wilderness to support additional elephant populations without causing environmental strain.
Domesticated elephants may carry diseases that could spread to wild populations, or vice versa. This poses significant health risks to both domesticated and wild elephants.
Our sanctuary provides the best alternative: a safe, semi-natural environment where elephants live peacefully under expert care while promoting conservation and sustainable tourism.
At Sapana, we've created an environment that balances their need for safety with their natural behaviors. Our elephants enjoy:
